National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
The idea of establishing a University in Greece emerged alongside with the Greek War of Independence in 1821. The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, officially founded in 1837 is the first University not only of Greece but both the Balkan peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean region. It is the largest state institution of higher learning in Greece, and among the largest universities in Europe. With a student body of about 68.500 undergraduate and postgraduate students, over 2.100 members of academic staff and approximately 1.000 administrative and secretarial staff and specialised personnel, the University of Athens aims at excellence in both teaching and research in a significantly varied range of disciplines. It is a member of CIVIS, a European civic university formed by ten leading institutions across Europe.
The Department of Digital Arts and Cinema was established in 2019 and its mission is to cultivate outstanding artists and professionals within the context of Art and Technology and more specifically in the fields of interactive arts, animation and film in the digital age. The undergraduate programme consists of two basic pillars: Digital art and Cinema (filmaking). These two basic orientations intertwine and complement each other, therefore they co-exist within the course of study. The Digital Arts and Cinema department is located in the Evripos Complex of the island of Evia an hour away from Athens metropolitan area and it is part of University of Athens strategic decentralization planning.
